Qualitative Open Research, October 16th 2025

Together with the NL Reproducibility Network, Context Network organized an interactive webinar on Qualitative Open Research.  Dr. Tamarinde Haven, who is a board member of both networks, chaired and opened the meeting. She described how qualitative researchers have increasingly engaged with the Open Science and reproducible research debates which underlined the importance of qualitative researchers and open science scholars engaging with each other. The first speaker, Dr Nicki Lisa Cole, opened with an overview of empirical and conceptual work that connects qualitative research with open and reproducible research. She highlighted both relevant obstacles as well as underexplored opportunities for open and reproducible research. Next, Dr Michelle Jamieson zoomed in on a specific practice from qualitative scholarship, namely positionality statements, and examined how this practice can help quantitative research to become more open and transparent. The presentations were followed by a lively discussion moderated by Dr. Sarahanne Fieldthat resulted in invitations from multiple participants to work together on this important topic. We would like to thank our speakers, all the participants and the NL Reproducibility Network for the interesting morning!

Materiality in Ethnographic Research June 2nd 2025

On June 2nd was the biannual meeting of Context-network! This time about materiality in ethnographic research. Laura Vonk, Joost Beuving en Edwin Rap presented their interesting insights based on examples about car dealers, advertising campaigns and uniforms. In the break, Suzanne Roggeveen guided two observational exercises (unstructured and structured by Mentimeter). In the photos we can see that all of our materialities were busy observing the accessibility of our host location – the University of Leiden. Do you want to attend one of our next meetings or become a member of our network? Please send us an email through the contact form!
